Evans Coghill founders Chris Folk and Alan Banks
Evans Coghill Homes, one of the builders at McLean’s Overlake neighborhood, is known for its focus on high quality and excellent value. That focus was honored in 2016 by the Greater Charlotte Home Builders Association, when it named Evans Coghill its Builder of the Year.
Given that success, you may be surprised to learn that the founders of Evans Coghill Homes met while building a Habitat for Humanity house; that the company is named, not after them, but for their grandmothers; and that giving back to the community remains a top priority for founders Alan Banks and Chris Folk.
Evans Coghill Homes donates a portion of the profit from each home sale to Habitat for Humanity. This year, Alan is president of the 14,000-member NC Homebuilders Association, where’s he’s a strong advocate for affordable housing.
“I believe strongly in the idea of home and what it means to the success of families and how it builds strong communities,” Alan says.
From publisher to homebuilder
Alan is Chief Marketing Officer of Evans Coghill Homes, which he founded with Chris, now Chief Construction Officer, in 2001. The Charlotte-based building company originated from an idea that the two men had after they met while helping build a Habitat for Humanity house.
At the time, Chris was a general contractor building homes in Charlotte’s most desirable neighborhoods. Alan, a mechanical engineer by training, had built a successful publishing business anchored in the home-building industry.
They figured that with Chris’s background and experience in building and Alan’s eye for marketing new homes, they could form a formidable alliance. A decade and a half later, Evans Coghill Homes has grown to become one of the most respected and successful builders in the region.
A philosophy to build and live by

Evans Coghill’s model home offers comfortable family spaces indoors and out, and unparalleled trim work.
Three philosophies are the key to how Evans Coghill approaches each transaction: Lead with Integrity, Listen with Passion, and Execute with Excellence.
Understanding and then meeting the evolving tastes of their customers has helped Evans Coghill succeed, Alan says.
“Today’s new-home buyers know what they want, and it usually cannot be found in a resale home. That is where our McLean home plans and features come together to create the feeling that ‘this is just right for me.’
“Decide on master up or down plans, inviting chef-oriented kitchens, comfortable family spaces, private work spaces, unparalleled trim work and many different finishes and choices to make it uniquely yours.
“We are proud to be part of McLean and look forward to showing you the Evans Coghill Difference.”
Location is key

McLean residents can enjoy miles of walking trails through woods and along ponds and Lake Wyile.
Alan and Chris also put extensive time and effort into selecting the best community matches for the Evans Coghill home.
“The neighborhood needs to reflect our brand and appeal to home buyers who appreciate the Evans Coghill Difference. McLean does exactly this and more,” Alan explains.
“When considering the premium Lake Wylie location, incredible neighborhood plan, experience of the developer and opportunity to showcase what makes Evans Coghill special, we knew McLean would be a good place for us. “
